They say that behind every cloud there’s a silver lining. For Benfica, that silver lining is surely the opportunity of making things right by defeating Chelsea to win the Europa League. The cloud was their shocking loss to Porto in the league on the weekend. Not only was it their first loss of the entire season, it came in injury time against their hated rivals and has likely cost them the title.Chelsea could have the dubious honour this year of winning both titles in reverse order. Nice as it sounds, seems to me you’d rather win them the other way around.

Prediction: Chelsea wins 2-1.

Chelsea enters the final full of confidence after Frank Lampard’s record-breaking performance. Even though the odds favour Chelsea, it would be wrong to under estimate the Portuguese giants.


Benfica come into the final with just four combined losses this season, but failing to get out of the group stage in Champions League play has led them to a point they’ve reached eight times. They’ve lost six straight UEFA finals and will enter Wednesday’s affair eager to snap their half century long streak since last winning a trophy.
